Our Family Story

History

1972

The Beginning

Spang’s opened for business in 1972 when Ed ‘Spang’ Reid and Ruth ‘Rosie’ Reid moved to St. Germain with their five children from Evergreen Park, Illinois.

The Reids had vacationed in St. Germain for many years prior to the move and fell in love with the area.  On one of those trips, the Reids purchased the restaurant which at one time was a tavern called ‘The Hearth’.  About the only thing that remains original to the building today is the downstairs fieldstone fireplace.

After many months of building, remodeling, scrubbing and cleaning, the restaurant was ready to open in June of 1972 and is operated by the Reid family to this day.  In 1988, Spang and Rosie sold the restaurant to their son Joe, who still owns and operates it today.  The entire extended family and many loyal friends and employees have made up the staff throughout the restaurant’s history.  It truly is a ‘family’ affair.

We're Grateful

The family has also been very active in the community and has helped raise tens of thousands of dollars throughout the years for various non-profit organizations through their spaghetti and pizza benefit dinners.

On behalf of the Reid family, we would like to take this opportunity to thank our loyal customers, friends, and employees for their help, support and patronage over the past 50 years.  We hope to be able to serve you and your family for many more years to come and also hope you will visit Spang’s again very soon!
